The General Assembly of the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) in Basel, held in autumn 2018, decided to launch a theological reflection process on Christian speaking of God. Common theological work, that is, common learning and teaching in the form of common theological study processes and doctrinal conversations, is one of the ways of realizing church communion through which the unity of the Church of Jesus Christ is experienced and promoted.
In early 2019, the CPCE Council mandated a study group that developed a draft study document by late autumn 2021. At the beginning of 2022, the CPCE Council discussed the text in depth and asked for some aspects of the text to be developed further. In June 2022, with the approval of the Presidium of the CPCE Council, a draft document was sent to the member churches of the CPCE. The churches were also invited to delegate a representative to a consultation on “Christian Speaking about God,” which was held in December 2022 at Bad Vöslau, near Vienna.
At the consultation in Bad Vöslau, delegates from the CPCE member churches discussed the draft study document very intensively. Following the CPCE’s working methods, the Bad Vöslau Consultation forwarded a recommendation to the CPCE Council on the composition of an editorial group for the study document, including members of the initiative study group.
The editorial group of the study process “Christian Speaking of God” was given a mandate by the Council and started its work in January 2023. The group met several times as a whole over the internet, working in pairs in between. The work on the text of the document was completed in a very concentrated meeting in Vienna from 8-10 September.
As a next step, the original English document of about 70 pages will also be translated into German and presented in two languages to the CPCE Council, which will decide on forwarding the document to the CPCE General Assembly in Sibiu in autumn 2024. The process of theological reflection initiated at the Basel General Assembly in 2018 will conclude with a decision on the text in Sibiu. The process of reception of the text in the member churches of the CPCE will then continue.
The study document seeks to support and promote the speaking of God within the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe.

Die Generalversammlung der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa (GEKE) hat im Herbst 2018 in Basel beschlossen, einen theologischen Reflexionsprozess zum christlichen Reden von Gott zu starten. Gemeinsame theologische Arbeit, d.h. gemeinsames Lernen und Lehren in Form von gemeinsamen theologischen Studienprozessen und Lehrgesprächen, ist eine Form der Verwirklichung von Kirchengemeinschaft, durch die die Einheit der Kirche Jesu Christi erfahren und gefördert wird.
Anfang 2019 beauftragte der GEKE-Rat eine Studiengruppe, die bis zum Spätherbst 2021 einen Entwurf des Studiendokuments erarbeitete. Anfang 2022 diskutierte der GEKE-Rat den Text eingehend und bat darum, einige Aspekte des Textes weiterzuentwickeln. Im Juni 2022 wurde mit Zustimmung des Präsidiums des GEKE-Rates der Entwurf des Dokuments an die Mitgliedskirchen der GEKE verschickt. Die Kirchen wurden außerdem eingeladen, eine Vertreterin bzw. einen Vertreter zu einer Konsultation zum Thema “Christliches Reden von Gott” zu entsenden, die im Dezember 2022 in Bad Vöslau bei Wien stattfand.
Im Rahmen der Konsultation in Bad Vöslau diskutierten die Teilnehmenden aus den Mitgliedskirchen der GEKE sehr intensiv über den Entwurf des Studiendokuments. Im Einklang mit der Arbeitsweise der GEKE hat die Bad Vöslauer Konsultation dem GEKE-Rat eine Empfehlung für die Zusammensetzung der Redaktionsgruppe für das Studiendokument übermittelt. Die Aufstellung umfasste auch Mitglieder und Mitgliedrinnen der initiierenden Studiengruppe.
Die Redaktionsgruppe des Studienprozesses “Christliches Reden von Gott” wurde vom Rat beauftragt und nahm im Januar 2023 ihre Arbeit auf. Die Gruppe traf sich mehrmals als Ganzes über das Internet und arbeitete dazwischen in Zweiergruppen. Die Arbeit am Text des Dokuments wurde in einem sehr konzentrierten Treffen in Wien vom 8. bis 10. September abgeschlossen.
In einem nächsten Schritt wird das englische Originaldokument von rund 70 Seiten auch ins Deutsche übersetzt und zweisprachig dem GEKE-Rat vorgelegt. Dieser wird über die Weiterleitung des Dokuments an die Vollversammlung der GEKE im Herbst 2024 in Sibiu entscheiden. Der auf der Basler Vollversammlung 2018 begonnene Prozess der theologischen Reflexion wird mit der Entscheidung über den Text in Sibiu abgeschlossen. Danach wird der Prozess der Rezeption des Textes in den Mitgliedskirchen der GEKE fortgesetzt.
Das Studiendokument beabsichtigt, das Reden von Gott innerhalb der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa zu unterstützen und zu fördern.
