“The Church of Lippe is once again faster than everyone else” – this headline of a regional newspaper from June 1973 was mentioned by Dietmar Arends, the Church leader of the Church of Lippe (Germany) at a commemoration event for the 50th anniversary of the Leuenberg agreement on 17 June 2023. It is a unique way, in which reformed and lutheran Christians are living together in this Church: three out of four presbyteries are reformed and one is lutheran. Discussions about pulpit and table fellowship have been going on in this church earlier and led to a regional agreement only for the Lippe church in 1970. With this background the Church of Lippe was in June 1973 in fact the first to sign the Leuenberg Agreement.
On 16/17 June 2023 the Synod of the Church came together in Lemgo, one of the European Cities of Reformation, to commemorate the anniversary. During a festive worship service on Sunday 18 June Oliver Engelhardt from the CPCE head office handed over the anniversary medal of the CPCE. “It symbolises that church communion has two sides – on the one hand, the pulpit and table fellowship of Protestants of different denominations and on the other hand, the integration into a Europe-wide communion of Protestant churches” he said.

“Die Lippische Landeskirche ist wieder einmal schneller als alle anderen” – diese Schlagzeile einer Regionalzeitung vom Juni 1973 erwähnte Dietmar Arends, Landessuperintendent der Lippischen Landeskirche, bei einer Gedenkveranstaltung zum 50-jährigen Bestehen der Leuenberger Konkordie am 17. Juni 2023. Es ist eine einzigartige Weise, in der reformierte und lutherische Christen in dieser Kirche zusammenleben: drei von vier Presbyterien sind reformiert und eines ist lutherisch. Diskussionen über Kanzel- und Tischgemeinschaft gab es in dieser Kirche schon früher und führten 1970 zu einer regionalen Vereinbarung nur für Lippe. Vor diesem Hintergrund war die Lippische Landeskirche im Juni 1973 tatsächlich die erste, die die Leuenberger Konkordie unterzeichnete.
Am 16./17. Juni 2023 kam die Landessynode der Kirche in Lemgo, einer der europäischen Reformationsstädte, zusammen, um das Jubiläum zu begehen. Im Rahmen eines Festgottesdienstes am Sonntag, 18. Juni, überreichte Oliver Engelhardt von der GEKE-Geschäftsstelle die Jubiläumsmedaille der GEKE. “Sie versinnbildlicht, dass Kirchengemeinschaft zwei Seiten hat – einerseits die Kanzel- und Abendmahlsgemeinschaft von Evangelischen unterschiedlicher Konfession und zum anderen die Einbindung in eine europaweite Gemeinschaft von evangelischen Kirchen”, so Engelhardt.
