With great respect and heartfelt blessings, I congratulate Pope Leo XIV on his election. I wish him God’s rich blessings, wisdom, presence of mind and the inner freedom to allow himself to be challenged by the Gospel time and again in his service to the global Church.
With his spiritual journey as an Augustinian, his many years of service in Latin America and his rich experience in the worldwide Church, Pope Leo XIV brings with him an impressive breadth of vision. His episcopal motto, ‘nos multi in illo uno unum’ – ‘In the One we are many’ – is a profound theological vision that is also shared by the Reformed tradition: unity in Christ as the source of reconciliation and shared responsibility in a divided world.
The fact that he bears the name Leo as pope is also reminiscent of Leo XIII, who laid the foundations for modern Catholic social teaching in 1891 with his encyclical Rerum Novarum. The combination of spiritual depth and social justice is a lasting legacy – and at the same time an important bridge in ecumenical cooperation.
I hope that Pope Leo XIV will continue the global synodal path with openness and courage and take the voices of believers from all continents seriously. Today more than ever, we need churches that build bridges – and a pontificate that credibly advocates for the dignity of all people. His first words were about the desire for peace. It was touching that the Pope placed God’s unconditional love at the centre of his greeting.
For the Protestant Church in Switzerland and the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe, it is a strong sign when ecumenical relations are deepened and the common voice of Christians for justice, peace and the integrity of creation becomes loud and audible. We are also united by our common mission to proclaim the Gospel of God’s love in word and deed – across denominational boundaries. In this spirit, we look forward to a respectful, open and spiritually inspired dialogue with Pope Leo XIV.

Mit grosser Achtung und herzlichen Segenswünschen gratuliere ich Papst Leo XIV. zu seiner Wahl. Ich wünsche ihm für seinen Dienst an der Weltkirche Gottes reichen Segen, Weisheit, Geistesgegenwart und die innere Freiheit, sich immer wieder vom Evangelium herausfordern zu lassen.
Papst Leo XIV. bringt mit seinem geistlichen Weg als Augustiner, seinem langjährigen Dienst in Lateinamerika und seiner reichen Erfahrung in der weltweiten Kirche eine beeindruckende Weite mit. Sein bischöflicher Wahlspruch „nos multi in illo uno unum“ – „In dem Einen sind wir vielen eins“ – ist eine tiefe theologische Vision, die auch die reformierte Tradition teilen kann: Einheit in Christus als Quelle für Versöhnung und gemeinsame Verantwortung in einer zerrissenen Welt.
Dass er als Papst den Namen Leo trägt, erinnert zugleich an Leo XIII., der 1891 mit der Enzyklika Rerum Novarum die moderne katholische Soziallehre begründete. Die Verbindung von geistlicher Tiefe und sozialer Gerechtigkeit ist ein bleibendes Erbe – und zugleich eine wichtige Brücke in der ökumenischen Zusammenarbeit.
Ich hoffe, dass Papst Leo XIV. den weltweiten synodalen Weg mit Offenheit und Mut weitergeht und die Stimmen der Gläubigen aus allen Kontinenten ernst nimmt. Gerade heute braucht es Kirchen, die Brücken bauen – und ein Pontifikat, das sich glaubwürdig für die Würde aller Menschen einsetzt. Seine ersten Worte galten dem Wunsch nach Frieden. Es war berührend, dass der Papst die bedingungslose Liebe Gottes in seiner Begrüssung ins Zentrum gestellt hat.
Für die Evangelisch-reformierte Kirche Schweiz und die Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa ist es ein starkes Zeichen, wenn die ökumenischen Beziehungen vertieft werden und die gemeinsame Stimme der Christinnen und Christen für Gerechtigkeit, Frieden und die Bewahrung der Schöpfung laut und hörbar wird. Ebenso verbindet uns der gemeinsame Auftrag, das Evangelium von der Liebe Gottes in Wort und Tat zu verkünden – über konfessionelle Grenzen hinweg. In diesem Sinne freuen wir uns auf einen respektvollen, offenen und geistlich inspirierten Dialog mit Papst Leo XIV.
