„Wir können nicht Ostern feiern, ohne auch an die Flüchtlinge zu denken.“ Mit diesen Worten stellt der Präsident der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa (GEKE) Gottfried Locher eine Spendenaktion vor, die für die medizinische Versorgung von auf Lesbos und in Aleppo festsitzenden Menschen gewidmet ist. „Aufgrund des drohenden Ausbruchs des Corona-Virus ist es dringend erforderlich, jetzt sofort die ohnehin prekäre Lage im medizinischen Bereich dort zu lindern, wo Menschen auf der Flucht oder mit kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen konfrontiert sind.“
Die GEKE verbindet in ihrem Aufruf zwei Hilfsprojekte und bittet um Unterstützung:
Mit Hilfe der Evangelisch-reformierten Kirche Schweiz bringt die Guido Fluri Stiftung Hilfsgüter auf die griechische Insel Lesbos. Seit der Zuspitzung der Situation auf Lesbos im März 2020 und des drohenden Corona-Ausbruchs bestückt die Stiftung das Vostanio-Spital in Mytilini mit medizinischem Material, etwa mit einer Sterilisationsbox. Aufgrund der aktuellen Entwicklung wurden von der Ärzteschaft unter anderem dringend benötigte Schutzausrüstungen angefragt. Spendengelder werden – nach Absprache mit dem Spital und nach Rücksprache mit der Koordinatorin vor Ort – direkt an die Lieferfirmen überwiesen, sodass die Lieferung möglichst umgehend erfolgen kann. Der kurzfristige Bedarf liegt bei EUR 60.000,-.
Das Gustav Adolf-Werk (Leipzig) meldet die Bitte der von der Union Armenisch-Evangelischer Gemeinden in Syrien betriebenen Bethel-Poliklinik in Aleppo nach Desinfektionsmaterial, Schutzmasken und anderen dringend benötigten medizinischen Artikeln. Es werden EUR 22.000,- (24.000,- USD) benötigt, um das Nötigste besorgen zu können.
„Ich bitte alle Mitgliedskirchen und Kooperationspartner der GEKE, aber auch die vielen mit unserer Arbeit verbundenen Einzelpersonen, dem Spendenaufruf zu folgen und zusätzlich die Information in ihrem jeweiligen Netzwerk weiter zu verbreiten“, sagt GEKE-Generalsekretär Mario Fischer. Da wegen der Corona-Krise die Ostergottesdienste und damit die Kollekten dieses Jahr nicht wie üblich durchgeführt werden können, wird direkt auf die Spendenkonten der Guido Fluri-Stiftung (Schweizer Franken) und des Gustav Adolf-Werks (EUR-Raum) verwiesen. Alle Spenden, die auf einem der beiden Konten unter dem Kennwort „GEKE Osterkollekte 2020“ eingehen, werden je zur Hälfte auf die beiden Organisationen aufgeteilt (Kontonummern: siehe unten). Sollten die angestrebten Spendensummen übertroffen werden, so würde das Geld gezielt für Hilfsprojekte vor Ort, in Aleppo bzw. auf Lesbos, eingesetzt.
„Während wir uns in Europa dem Corona-Virus stellen, dürfen wir nicht die Menschen an den Rändern des Kontinents vergessen“, so GEKE-Präsident Locher. „Ihre Spende zu Ostern 2020 wird Leben retten und ich danke schon jetzt für jede Gabe!“
“We cannot celebrate Easter without also including the refugees in our thoughts.” This was the message delivered by the President of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) Gottfried Locher, as he launched the appeal for donations to help fund medical assistance for the people stranded on Lesbos and in Aleppo. “The threat of the coronavirus breaking out means that the already precarious medical situation for refugees and those afflicted by military conflict needs absolutely urgent attention.”
The CPCE is including two aid projects in its appeal, which we urge you to support:
The Evangelical Reformed Church of Switzerland is helping the Guido Fluri Foundation to get emergency supplies to the Greek island of Lesbos. Since the situation on the island escalated in March 2020 and the threat of a coronavirus outbreak emerged, the foundation has been equipping the Vostanio hospital Mytilini with medical supplies, such as a sterilisation cabinet. Under the evolving circumstances, the doctors there now urgently require personal protective equipment, amongst other things. The donations we receive – this has been agreed with the hospital and the local coordinator – will be sent directly to the companies who supply this equipment to ensure it can be delivered as quickly as possible. They currently require 60,000 euros in funding.
The Gustav Adolf Agency (based in Leipzig) has reported a request from the Bethel Polyclinic run by the Armenian Protestant Community in Syria in Aleppo for disinfectant, face masks and other urgently needed medical items. They require 22,000 euros (24,000 U.S. dollars) to procure the basic essentials.
“I ask all the member churches and collaboration partners of the CPCE, but also the many individuals linked to our work, to respond to this appeal and also spread the word throughout their own networks,” says the CPCE’s General Secretary, Mario Fischer. As the coronavirus crisis is preventing Easter services from taking place this year, together with the usual collections in church, we are appealing for donations to be made directly to the fundraising accounts of the Guido Fluri Foundation (Swiss Francs) and the Gustav Adolf Agency (Eurozone). The sums donated to both of these accounts under the reference “CPCE Easter Collection 2020” will be divided equally between the two organisations (bank details below). Should the money raised exceed the targets, any extra would be channelled into local aid projects in Aleppo and on Lesbos.
“In the face of our own battle with the coronavirus in Europe, we must not forget those on the outskirts of the continent,” says CPCE President Locher. “Your donation for Easter 2020 will save lives, and I thank you in advance for every single contribution!”
