Der Rat als Leitungsgremium der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa (GEKE) hat bei seiner Videotagung am 26. Juni 2020 den Rücktritt des Geschäftsführenden Präsidenten Gottfried Locher entgegengenommen. Mit der Geschäftsführung im Präsidium wurde kommissarisch Dr. John Bradbury (United Reformed Church, London) betraut.
Dr. Gottfried Locher war im Mai 2020 als Präsident der Evangelischen Kirche Schweiz zurückgetreten. «Es scheint mir folgerichtig, nun auch mein Amt in der GEKE niederzulegen», so Locher in seiner an den Rat gerichteten Begründung. «Im Rat sollten möglichst viele Amtsträgerinnen und Amtsträger vertreten sein.»
Locher war seit der Vollversammlung 2012 in Florenz Mitglied des Präsidiums der GEKE und wurde 2015 nach dem Tod von Bischof Dr. Friedrich Weber zum geschäftsführenden Präsidenten gewählt. Als besonderen Meilenstein seiner Amtszeit nannte Locher die Vollversammlung der GEKE im Basler Münster 2018.
Das Präsidium der GEKE wird aus drei Mitgliedern des Rates gebildet. Eine Nachwahl auf die freiwerdende dritte Position (neben Prof. Dr. Miriam Rose/DE und Dr. John Bradbury) ist für die nächste Ratssitzung im Januar 2021 in Strasbourg vorgesehen. «Präsidium, Rat und Geschäftsstelle der GEKE arbeiten eng und vertrauensvoll zusammen», sagt John Bradbury. «Der Beitritt der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche Islands zur GEKE und der intensive Austausch zwischen den Mitgliedskirchen zu den Auswirkungen der Corona-Krise zeigen, wie lebendig unsere Kirchengemeinschaft ist!»
CPCE receives resignation of President Locher, John Bradbury to assume interim role
The Council, as the leading body, of the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) received the resignation of Executive President Gottfried Locher during its session conducted via video conference on 26 June 2020. Dr John Bradbury (United Reformed Church, London) has been entrusted with the interim executive management.
Dr Locher had resigned from the office of President of the Protestant Church in Switzerland in May 2020. “I feel it is incumbent upon me to now also relinquish my office in the CPCE,” Locher wrote in his explanation to the Council, adding: “The Council should contain as many office holders as possible.”
Locher had been a member of the Presidium of the CPCE since the 2012 General Assembly in Florence and was elected its Executive President following the death of Bishop Friedrich Weber in 2015. He cited the General Assembly of the CPCE held in Basle Cathedral in 2018 as a particular milestone during his term in office.
The Presidium of the CPCE consists of three members of Council. The election to fill the resulting vacancy for the third position (alongside Professor Miriam Rose from Germany and Dr John Bradbury from the U.K.) is due to be held during the next Council session, scheduled for January 2021 in Strasbourg. “The Presidium, Council and head office enjoy a close and trusting working relationship,” according to Bradbury. “The admission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland to the CPCE and the member churches’ intensive discussions on the effects of the corona crisis demonstrate the vigour of our church communion!”
