The Board of Trustees of the Institute for Confessional Studies has unanimously elected the Reverend Dr Mario Fischer as the new Secretary for Catholic Issues and future Director of the Institute for Confessional Studies of the Evangelischer Bund in Bensheim. He will take office on 1 April 2026.
Mario Fischer has been the first full-time General Secretary of the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) holding this position since 2018. At the 9th General Assembly of the CPCE in Sibiu, Transylvania, in August 2024, Fischer announced that he would end his time as General Secretary in the first half of the new Council period. At its first meeting the CPCE Council consequently elected a search committee which in the coming weeks will determine the procedure for recruiting a new General Secretary and publish a job advertisement.
With his move to the Institute for Confessional Studies, Fischer will continue to be involved in ecumenical work and will return to his home in Hesse in a year’s time.
The members of the CPCE Council congratulated Mario Fischer expressing their pleasure at the fact that the cooperation will continue and announced that they would organise a good transition in the post of General Secretary.
