\u201ePeace-making is not appeasement<\/em>, and treating pain is not the same as numbing it. True reconciliation is impossible without sincerity and openness. [\u2026] Will we have the strength to speak of unconditional forgiveness to an enemy who does not repent and continues to kill? [\u2026] God\u2019s peace is a just peace\u201c.<\/p>\n

These words are from a sermon by Rev. Dr Dmytro Tsolin (Lviv) on the occasion of the 1000th day of the full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine on 19 November 2024.The Bible uses the concept of peace a lot and among Christians it has become a greeting, a liturgical element. But the meaning of the word needs to be clarified more in times of war.<\/p>\n

The General Assembly of the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe in asked to „reconsider doctrines of peace and war from a Protestant perspective“ in the summer of 2024. It is not only the CPCE, but many churches and ecumenical organisations, who ask such questions at the moment.<\/p>\n

The European regions of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) held a consultation in Vienna about \u201ePeace, Justice and Reconciliation in Times of War\u201c in early December\u201c, of which Dr Tsolin was also a participant.. This LWF consultation revealed clear differences in the thoughts of Lutheran churches in Europe. It showed that speaking about ‚doctrines of peace and war‘ is strongly influenced by personal experience. It will not be easy to reach a theological meta-level that accounts for these various views.<\/p>\n

The Conference of European Churches (CEC) also held a conference on „Just Peace“ in mid-December in Warsaw. The ecumenical movement \u2013 along with the World Council of Churches (WCC) on the global level \u2013 has worked a lot on questions of peace, justice, and reconciliation. Churches and ecumenical organisations need also to assess their own role in conflicts and in the face of a war. They must not only conduct an ethical debate, but are asked to react in prayer, practical aid and pastoral care. The CEC conference thus concluded with a session on \u201eTransforming Discipleship: Affirming Human Dignity and Life in Abundance\u201c.<\/p>\n

\u201eFrieden schaffen ist kein Appeasement, und Schmerz zu behandeln ist nicht dasselbe wie ihn zu bet\u00e4uben. Wahre Vers\u00f6hnung ist ohne Aufrichtigkeit und Offenheit unm\u00f6glich. […] Werden wir die Kraft haben, mit einem Feind, der zur Umkehr nicht bereit ist und weiter t\u00f6tet, \u00fcber bedingungslose Vergebung zu sprechen? […] Gottes Friede ist ein gerechter Friede\u201c.<\/p>\n

Diese Worte stammen aus einer Predigt von Pfarrer Dr. Dmytro Tsolin (Lviv) anl\u00e4sslich des 1000. Tages der russischen Aggression gegen die Ukraine am 19. November 2024. In der Bibel wird der Begriff Frieden h\u00e4ufig verwendet, und unter den Christen ist er zu einem Gru\u00df, zu einem liturgischen Element geworden. Aber die Bedeutung des Wortes muss in Zeiten des Krieges st\u00e4rker verdeutlicht werden.<\/p>\n

Die Vollversammlung der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa (GEKE) hat im Sommer 2024 beschlossen, \u201edie Lehren von Frieden und Krieg aus evangelischer Perspektive neu zu \u00fcberdenken\u201c. Nicht nur die GEKE, sondern viele Kirchen und \u00f6kumenische Organisationen stellen sich gegenw\u00e4rtig solche Fragen.<\/p>\n

Die europ\u00e4ischen Regionen des Lutherischen Weltbundes (LWB) hielten Anfang Dezember in Wien eine Konsultation zum Thema \u201eFrieden, Gerechtigkeit und Vers\u00f6hnung in Zeiten des Krieges\u201c ab, an der auch Dr. Tsolin teilnahm. Diese LWB-Konsultation machte gro\u00dfe Unterschiede im Denken der lutherischen Kirchen in Europa deutlich. Sie zeigte, dass das Sprechen \u00fcber \u201eLehren von Krieg und Frieden\u201c stark von eigenen Erfahrungen gepr\u00e4gt ist und es nicht einfach sein wird, eine theologische Metaebene zu erreichen, die all diese Erfahrungen aufnimmt.<\/p>\n

Auch die Konferenz Europ\u00e4ischer Kirchen (KEK) hielt Mitte Dezember in Warschau eine Konferenz zum Thema Gerechter Frieden ab. Die \u00f6kumenische Bewegung – auch als \u00d6kumenischer Rat der Kirchen (\u00d6RK) auf globaler Ebene – hat sich intensiv mit Fragen des Friedens, der Gerechtigkeit und der Vers\u00f6hnung besch\u00e4ftigt. Die Kirchen und \u00f6kumenischen Organisationen m\u00fcssen dabei auch ihre eigene Rolle in Konflikten und im Angesicht eines Krieges bewerten. Sie sollen nicht nur eine ethische Debatte f\u00fchren, sondern sind aufgefordert, mit Gebet, praktischer Hilfe und Seelsorge zu reagieren. Dementsprechend schloss die KEK-Konferenz mit einer Sitzung zum Thema \u201eTransformierte Nachfolge: F\u00fcr Menschenw\u00fcrde und ein Leben in F\u00fclle\u201c.<\/p>\n
