Protestant minority churches located in an Orthodox environment live under special circumstances, as does the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Georgia (ELCG), which covers territory reaching into Armenia and Azerbaijan. On 15 April 2022, the incumbent Bishop Markus Schoch stepped down to assume a new office as Prelate of Reutlingen in W\u00fcrttemberg. A few days later, on 1 May, his successor Rolf Bareis was installed as Episcopal Visitator.<\/p>\n
The change of guard was marked not only within the church itself, but also by representatives of the CPCE (Dr Stefan Cosoroaba) and the Centre for Protestant Theology in Eastern Europe (Revd Bogdan Munten) during the delegation\u2019s visit from 29\u00a0March to 1\u00a0April 2022. These are politically turbulent times, with thousands of citizens from Russia and Belarus fleeing to Georgia for political and economic reasons, whilst the wrangling over Abkhazia and Ossetia also wages on.<\/p>\n
The visitors were astonished to witness the standing that such a small church can have, as they learned not only about internal matters regarding parish life and the church\u2019s diaconal work, but also its political and ecumenical networks. During the short trip, the delegation visited the Council of Religions at the Ombudsman\u2019s Institution and the Georgian Governmental Agency for Religious Affairs. The Baptist, Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches held audiences to bid farewell to Markus Schoch and welcome Rolf Bareis. Even the elderly Patriarch Elias II wished to say goodbye in person to Bishop Schoch. It became clear during this visit how important it is in such a setting for the Protestants to be seen as a historical church led by a bishop. The volume of parish members, large or small, plays a subordinate role there, as discussions are conducted at an official level. April 2022 trat der bisherige Bischof Markus Schoch von seinem Amt zur\u00fcck, um als Pr\u00e4lat von Reutlingen in W\u00fcrttemberg eine neue Wirkungsst\u00e4tte anzutreten. Wenige Tage sp\u00e4ter, am 1. Mai, begann sein Nachfolger, Rolf Bareis, seinen Dienst als bisch\u00f6flicher Visitator.<\/p>\n Der Stabwechsel geschah nicht nur intern, sondern wurde auch von Vertretern der GEKE (Dr. Stefan Cosoroaba) und des ZETO (Pfr. Uwe Seidner und Bogdan Munten) begleitet. Die Delegation besuchte die Kirche vom 29. M\u00e4rz bis 1. April 2022. Der Besuch fand im Kontext einer politisch bewegten Zeit statt: In Georgien haben tausende von russischen und wei\u00dfrussischen B\u00fcrgern aus politischen und wirtschaftlichen Gr\u00fcnden Zuflucht gesucht. \u00a0Zudem rei\u00dft das Tauziehen um Abchasien und Ossetien nicht ab.<\/p>\n Als Besucher ist man erstaunt festzustellen, was f\u00fcr ein gro\u00dfes Gewicht eine kleine Kirche haben kann. So nahm die Delegation nicht nur interne Informationen zu dem Gemeindeleben und der diakonischen Arbeit auf, sondern auch zu deren politischen und \u00f6kumenischen Vernetzung. In knapper Zeit wurde der Rat der Religionen bei der Institution des Ombudsmannes sowie die Agentur f\u00fcr religi\u00f6se Fragen der Regierung Georgiens besucht. Die Baptistische, die R\u00f6misch-Katholische und die Orthodoxe Kirche empfingen Markus Schoch zum Abschieds- und Rolf Bareis zum Antrittsbesuch. Selbst der in die Jahre gekommene Patriarch Elias II. lie\u00df es sich nicht nehmen, Bischof Schoch pers\u00f6nlich zu verabschieden. Es wurde bei diesem Besuch deutlich, wie wichtig es f\u00fcr die Protestant:innen dieses Kontextes ist, als historische Kirche gesehen zu werden und einen Bischof als Leitungsperson zu haben. Kleine oder gro\u00dfe Zahlen von Gemeindegliedern spielen da eine geringf\u00fcgige Rolle, denn das Gespr\u00e4ch wird von Amt zu Amt gef\u00fchrt.
