Human rights

In 2008, the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) published a statement called “The Russian Orthodox Church’s Basic Teaching on Human Dignity, Freedom and Rights“ ( On the one hand, this document proves the ROC’s commitment to human rights, on the other it shows obvious and clear differences with regard to the understanding of human rights by Protestant Churches. Prepared by the working group on ethics, the Presidium of CPCE therefore published in 2009 an answer to the ROC declaration under the title “Human Rights and Morality“. This document outlines the protestant understanding of human dignity and human rights and concludes by inviting the ROC for a dialogue session on these issues. A first step in this dialogue was accomplished in December 2011 in the Evangelical Academy Bad Boll. Participants agreed to pursue this controversial, but also necessary dialogue.
