The CPCE as a Community of Churches

How should the development of the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) continue? This was the question discussed from 15-19 September by 36 experts on the church and theology from 17 countries around the world. The CPCE and the Evangelical Church in Hessen and Nassau (EKHN) had issued the invitation to the Martin Niemöller House in Arnoldshain. One of the issues discussed was whether the CPCE as a communion of churches is itself a church. This is related to the question whether the churches should respond to new challenges in the form of common confessions in a European framework.

The consultation recommended, among other things, that the Council of the CPCE should examine how the working methods and the structure of the CPCE could be strengthened to carry out its tasks. In this connection, the experts observed that the CPCE is related contextually to Europe but that the “model of church fellowship” is not limited to Europe. The CPCE should clarify how it relates to other existing expressions of church fellowship.
